What is a TUBA?

This is a method of breast augmentation using a single incision made around the belly button.

What are the advantages of a TUBA?

The big advantage is an extremely well hidden scar. It also involves only one incision versus two for other methods of breast augmentation.

How is it possible to place a breast implant through such a distant incision?

Mainly through the use of specialized instruments. Also, because saline implants can be filled once they're in position, they can be passed through a narrow tunnel up to the breasts. This is not possible with silicone implants, which come "pre filled".

Can the implants be placed under the muscle?

It is possible to place implants either above or below the muscle with this method.

Are there disadvantages to the TUBA?

Yes. If additional surgery is required, such as to replace a deflated implant, another incision is usually necessary. Also, during the initial implant placement, another incision might be necessary if implant position is not acceptable or there is unexpected bleeding.

Is recovery any different?

No, except that you will have some abdominal soreness.

Are there any other differences with respect to implant lifespan, capsular contracture or rippling?

No, studies have found no appreciable difference compared to other methods of augmentation. (Please refer to the other section of the website on breast augmentation).
