Who
are the best candidates for mastopexy?
Almost any woman who desires correction of sagging breast is candidate for
mastopexy. However, women who plan on having additional children should wait
as pregnancy invariably results in changes in breast size, shape and position.
A breast lift may lead to inability to breast feed.
Where
will the incisions be and will there be scars?
All mastopexys involve making incision on the breasts. There are many different
types of mastopexys. They differ mainly in the placement and length of the
scars. All mastopexys involve an incision around the areola. Some involve
additional incisions. All breast lifts, therefore, results in scars. The incisions
are placed to minimize the visibility of the scars. However, scarring is usually
the main disadvantage to having a breast lift.
How
do you decide what type of breast lift to do?
This is determined by how much lift the patient needs and how much loose skin
needs to be removed. More extensive sagging with a large amount of excess skin
will require a more extensive lift and therefore longer incisions. I can determine
the exact type of lift you will need only by performing an examination.
Patients that elect
to have implants at the time of their lift may be able to decrease the length
of incision because the implant can take up some of the skin laxity.
Will
there be a loss of nipple sensation?
This is possible with any breast lift as there is always an incision around
the areola. I make every attempt to preserve the nerve supply to this area
but loss of sensation may still occur.
What
is the recovery time?
Most patients take pain pills for one to two weeks. You will not be allowed
any lifting for two weeks and progress gradually after that. Most patients
need about two weeks off of work or longer if their job requires lifting.
Will
my breasts sag again after surgery?
That depends on several factors. Patients that get pregnant or gain significant
weight after a lift are likely to have recurrent sagging. Most patients get
a very long lasting result. Of course some sagging is normal with aging.
Does
insurance cover this procedure?
The answer is no. Patients with larger breast may undergo breast reduction
(see “breast reduction”). This involves a decrease in breast size and a lift.
Patients undergoing breast lifting alone will not be covered by insurance.
